Now that we know that we’ll be living on the Big Island of Hawaii, the next step is deciding if we bring everything with us or start a fresh new life and buy new.
This is something you really need to think about before you move to Hawaii. It isn’t something to take lightly because it can mean leaving everything behind or spending a lot of money to ship all your belongings to your new home.
Moving to Hawaii
Our decision, start fresh with all new. Well, for the most part.
After getting a quote from Pods, for over $7,000 for their smallest pod and waiting as much as a month for our belongings to arrive in Hawaii, we decided we could pretty much buy everything all over again and spend less money. We weren’t planning on bringing everything anyway.
We will be bringing some of our clothing, mostly whatever we can fit in one suitcase per person and we’ll mail some of our special personal items like pictures, family tree research, and a few small boxes of toys. Mostly just the expensive Lego’s of Thaddeus’ and a few other items we don’t want to part from.
We will be selling off everything else and I mean everything. Furniture, tools, lawn mower, snow blower, appliances, and everything in between.
You sure have a lot of decisions to make. I’m sure they will all be worth it. How exciting!!!
WOW, what a minimalist approach. We would have to go through and pitch so much! That would be super hard to say the least, especially for my kids! I don’t know what we would do. It would probably depend on whether we were moving ourselves or if a company was moving me!
It’ll be hard on the kids and us because we’ll be doing away with a lot of stuff, and some of the stuff is pretty new. But, we had to weight the options, pay over $7K to ship the stuff we have and not even all of the stuff just enough to fit in a container meant for 1 room, or buy all new. Yeah, we’ll be losing out on the fact that we won’t be able to sell most of our furniture for the price we paid for it, especially the new kitchen appliances and washer/dryer, but we could buy all new again for less than it would cost to ship. Unfortunately, moving to Hawaii means you get to pack your own stuff, but you don’t get to drive it to your new home on your own. You have to pay a storage company, a shipping company, and probably a trucking company.
Wow, that must’ve been a hard decision. But, stuff is replaceable. And, if you are bringing the most important items, then the rest doesn’t matter!
Only part of it has been a hard decision. For the most part a lot of our furniture is replaceable. I’m still debating spending some money to have a few tables shipped because they were my Grandmothers and are probably as old as me if not older. But we’ll see.
Omg, I didn’t realize you’re moving. CRAZY adventure ahead! How fun…can’t wait to see how life changes!
What an adventure! Buying new things will be so fun. :)
Sounds like you have quite the move ahead of you! I’d definitely spend the $ if it were available…
You definitely have to have the money to make the initial move, either to move your belongings or to buy new. It’s not like moving from Michigan to Ohio or even Michigan to Florida where you can rent a Uhaul.
Wow, so exciting and scary at the same time. I’m having to part with lots of my stuff right now. I think it would be easier if I was moving to Hawaii to part with, lol.
Yeah, the moving to Hawaii does make it a lot easier to part with stuff.
Sad to see you boxing up to leave us – seeing the boxes means its real :-(
But maybe I can get a good deal at your garage sale :-)
If you are in the need of a washer, dryer, fridge, stove, dishwasher, dining set, buffet, and even some bedroom furniture, than yes. Might have to wait a few months, but it’ll be a good deal!
