You never realize just how big the Hoover Dam is until you are standing on it. The movies depict it as being significant, but in reality, it is pretty damn big! Pun was intended there. The Hoover Dam

Did you know that the Hoover Dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936 and was initially known as the Boulder Dam? It was renamed to the Hoover Dam in 1947, after President Herbert Hoover. During its construction by thousands of workers over one hundred lives were lost.

Although you can visit the Hoover Dam most days, some of their tours are not always available. Be sure to check their website for tour details. We didn’t take any of the tours that are offered. However, we did purchase the pass to go into the museum/visitor center. I would recommend that you at least buy this ticket when visiting, especially if you are short on time.

I love that there is a plaque right in the middle that indicates the border of Nevada and Arizona. Although you cannot see it in my pictures, there are two large clocks at each intake tower that show the current time based on where you are on the dam. Nevada time and Arizona time.

Colorado River

I was surprised at how low the Colorado River appeared to be. In movies, it always seems to be much higher. I guess that is part of movie magic.

Although this was the only stop we made in Nevada during our road trip, we made several stops in Arizona. If you happen to be driving in the area of the Hoover Dam, be sure also to check out the Grand Canyon!

Looking for another great place to visit? Why not take a trip to the Grand Canyon? You will NOT be disappointed.

Viewing the Grand Canyon for the first time is probably one of the best and most amazing sights you'll ever see. Not only is the canyon grand in size, but that is probably a great way to describe the view.
