Just over two years ago, we took on a new adventure of living the Hawaii life! It has been a pretty good adventure so far. However, it is about to get even better. We have officially purchased some land on the Big Island of Hawaii; we own a piece of paradise!
It may have taken us much longer to purchase the land than expected, but it is our land! Our piece of paradise.
Our Piece of Paradise
Before purchasing, we wanted to travel around the island and live in different areas. We didn’t want to purchase in the first town we stayed in. What if we didn’t like it after a month, 6-months, or even a year. Since being in Hawaii, we’ve lived in just about all the main areas of the island. Except for a couple of areas, due to them being overly expensive and we knew we’d never afford those areas. We’ve settled in a little town called Naalehu, which is in the southernmost part of the island and the southernmost part of the United States!
We knew the area was the place even before we rented a home here. Every time we’ve driven to the city, we’ve loved it. It’s got great weather, beautiful views, and it’s a little town out in the middle of nowhere!
Buying Paradise in Hawaii
Now, I did mention that it took much longer to purchase the land than expected. This is because it wasn’t our first choice and each of the choices before this one ended up having issues with the selling of the land. Buying land in Hawaii isn’t as easy as it is on the mainland, even when you are paying cash!
The first lot we went to purchase was a 3-acre parcel with an excellent ocean view. This one didn’t happen due to ownership issues. I’m going to miss that ocean view! The next lot was down the road from the one we did get. It was a quarter acre parcel and had the same issue as the first lot. Third times a charm – After sitting in escrow for about two months and finding out there was an issue, we decided to cancel the offer on the second lot when a new lot came on the market. This lot was just a few spaces over. Approximately 45 days after reaching an agreement on the price, we closed on the purchase and the lot is ours.
Next step of owning a piece of paradise in Hawaii is clearing the lot, building, and making it our home! I’ll be posting much more about our little piece of paradise and updating you on the developments.
Update: Just as quickly as the property became ours, we sold it and moved back to the mainland for our kids to go to better schools. While we love Hawaii, and cannot wait to move back, our oldest son wanted to return to Michigan and attend a school where he could make friends. The things we do for our children!
I know where Naalehu is! It’s a beautiful little place, congratulations!!
Thanks Cindy! It is an exciting adventure for us, for sure.
