What is Vitamin D? Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is a fat soluble vitamin found in some foods such as fortified milk, oily fish and in some cereals. It is also manufactured by the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Despite available food sources of vitamin D and the body’s ability to self-produce this nutrient from sun exposure, 70% or more of children and adults have insufficient vitamin D level (U.S. National Center for Health Statistics). Vitamin D comes in two forms: Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is the preferred form as it is most effective at maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D in the body. Because of the concern of low vitamin D levels among infants and children, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends 400 IU per day of vitamin D3 taken with food. For healthy adults, a minimum of 1,000 IU per day of vitamin D3 is recommended. Higher doses of vitamin D may be warranted for those with vitamin D deficiency or certain health conditions. These levels should be determined by a health care professional. It is expected that the new Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI’s) for vitamin D will be released in 2010, which will reflect an increase in the daily requirement for vitamin D.

• Promoting a healthy mood and brain function.
• Supporting a healthy pregnancy and baby. All infants (breast-fed and bottle-fed) should receive 400 IU of vitamin D from birth, according to new recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

We were recently asked to review chewable Vitamin D by Nature Made that was part of a Vitamin D Family Pack.

We have been very lucky, Thaddeus loves taking his vitamins.  I knew we wouldn’t have a problem getting him to try these out and add them to his daily morning vitamin taking routine.  He really enjoys the orange taste of them and even asks for them if we forget to give it to him with his breakfast.

I love the Vitamin D Family Pack, it came with a big bottle of bubbles, which you can probably tell have been used since it’s already lost it’s label, along with a small coloring book and several small bottles of bubbles.  We’ll be using the small bottles of bubbles for Thaddeus’ birthday party coming up in a couple weeks, makes a great party favor for kids!
