Medicaid Health Care in America

We need REAL heath care reform!

If the way our current Medicaid health care in America is any indication of how shitty the heath care will be when it is provided by the United States Government (OBAMA) then I have to say we are in a sorry state of getting heath care!  Up until I was put into the hospital we always paid for our health care, when we had it, either through our employer or out of pocket.  In other words, we’ve always had Blue Cross, HAP, or some other type of medical health insurance.  That is until I was admitted into the hospital and wasn’t allowed to return back to work.  Because I wasn’t able to return to work, our medical coverage was cancelled and we had to apply for Medicaid.  Thankfully we met the requirements, well at least me and Thaddeus did, they won’t cover hubby.

Anyway, I filled out all the paperwork online while I was still in the hospital (my insurance was still active but I knew it was going to get cancelled at the end of the month) and we were told that we would have our answer within 45 days via the mail.  Within two weeks we had been accepted (me and Thaddeus) and we had our Medicaid cards.

Sounds great right?  Well it was, until I had Xavier and have tried to get him added for over a month now.  I call the case worker (6/26 or 5/27) and only get his voice mail.  I call again, same thing, no answer just voice mail.  I decide I’ll fax the information over so there is some proof (6/1).  No response.  I call again, and again, and again.  No response, no answer, nothing.  I then call his supervisor (June 9th).  She takes the information and starts to add Xavier to our case to help the worker out.  I figure the supervisor is working on it and I’ll wait for the information to come in the mail.  About a week or so later the hospital calls to get the Medicaid information on Xavier.  I still don’t have it, I explain to them that I’ve been calling and waiting and getting no where.  They tell me that they will give them a call and see what is going on.

I call my worker on 6/21 and left another message.  Still nothing.  I call again today and left a message for the manager.  I call the main number to see what I can do and she tells me to come in and set up an appointment, can’t do it over the phone because of identity issues.  Ummm, you can’t set up an appointment because I may not be me????

I then call the main office in Lansing.  What am I told?  The case workers are told not to answer the phones and not to worry about the phones, just work on what is in front of you.  She tells me that I have to send something in writing.  When I tell her I did that via fax she then tells me that it has to be through the mail because it can get lost and not given to the correct worker.  WTF?  I address the fax to the worker, send it to the fax number listed on my paperwork, and he’s not going to get it even though all the pages have my case number on it because they don’t give the faxes to the correct people?  She then proceeds to give me the wrong section manager and district managers phone numbers!

I call the correct section manager after talking to the wrong district manager, who was nice enough to give me the correct numbers, and you guessed it.  I had to leave a message because she apparently isn’t at her desk either!

So here we sit, waiting to get a 5 week old baby who’s in the NICU added to Medicaid after over a month of trying!  Oh and it does get worse, but I’ll leave that for another Medicaid rant another day.

So if you think we’ll be better off with this government health care that Obama will be forcing onto us (unless we want to spend thousands of dollars each month for private insurance or we are lucky enough for our employer to provide us with insurance) you better be ready for what will be coming because I’m going to guess that it’s going to be just as bad, if not worse than it is now!  It would be just our luck if this is just how it is here in Michigan and it’s much better in other states.

I’m not saying that Obama’s health care will be any better but Medicaid is state aid not national health care. It’s still a sorry state of affairs. Xavier should have automatically been covered from day one without problems. Can’t the hospital case manager help you?

State aid is the same as national health care, at least to me. It’s still provided by the government and if they can’t run what they currently have correctly I have no faith that they can run the entire countries health care. The hospital can only do so much, they can’t force the government to do what they should be doing or get the workers to do it either. They said they would call, but who knows how far that got.

Face Shawn Ann, we’re all screwed with this healthcare bill. Nancy Pelosi had the unmitigated gall to announce on TV that “now all Americans will have the same care we (senators) have”. REALLY?? Do you think any of them have to go through what you are going through or get denied ANY treatments? Hardly.

And no, what they passed is NOT the same as what Members of Congress have. Not even close.

PS: Clearly I’m out of the loop – I didn’t realize your baby was in the NICU. My Ro was in for 18 days. It was hell.

Oh I knew you’d love this post Shan LOL Yeah, we’ll never get anything like Congress, even though we pay for it.

Yup, had Xavier 8 weeks early, he’s been in the NICU for 5 weeks today. We’re looking at another month of him being in there :(

I agree with others Medicaid is state specific because of Welfare Reform of 96 Its not Obamas fault he only has a proposed health bill :) I live in a state where people on system :welfare cash benefits, WIC, Medicaid, ADC (aid to dependent children) and TANF (temporary assistance to needy families) were allowed to not work stay at home and collect benefits up until 1996. Now, everyone on gov’t assistance in any form in my state has to work in order to keep their benefits and adults have a harder time getting a medical card than a child does because adults are seen as abled-bodies that can get insurance of some form through their employer Plus there are tax-incentives here for those on assistance here to help them get off the system

Nowadays there are only a handful of states that allow those on assistance to sit at home not work and collect benefits off hand, and not singling her out in any way but I think California is still one of them because of shows like The Fairy Job Mother and Nadya Suleman.

What you went through with the social worker trying to get your son added is how it is in my area as well Case workers that work for the Dept of Jobs and Family Services and social workers are highly overworked w/ more than twice the amount of caseloads these days with economy hitting areas hard like mine and good increase needing assistance for the first time. Because of privacy laws, and to help prevent welfare fraud, case workers aren’t allowed to certain personal information over the phone. Its the same when you have to make an appointment to re-certify to keep a Medical card

I think its great that you and your son were able to get a medical card and be treated In my area, its like looking for a needle in a haystack to find a doctor, dentist or eye doctor that takes medicaid anymore. Having a parent on medicaid I know how tough it can be. Many doctors specialists and hospitals in my area have gotten away from Medicaid because the govt. reimbursement they receive for a patients care takes too long anywhere from 6 wks to over 6 months That is if they don’t have to fight the govt. to get it.

My advice would be to talk to the Billing Dept or the Financial Assistance Dept at the hospital both you and your son are treated at. In my area Medicaid does not back-date assistance leaving the patients responsible for any bills that occurred before their application date. Its the same in my area w/ Social Security. They don’t back date Survivors or Disability benefits. People have to apply for Social Security ASAP here esp. w/ Disability benefits since even a minor surgery can be seen as improving the disabled person’s condition

I had a relative that was in the NICU for quite a while as well. So I understand how you feel :)

OK, never said this problem was Obama’s problem, just said if this is what we have now and it’s run by the government I’d hate to see what we’ll have with the Obama health care starts up in a couple years. Michigan is obviously one of those states where you don’t have to try to work….with the number of families who are on assistance here it’s ridiculous. Oh and we won’t get to keep the medicaid but until the end of July, apparently hubby makes $64 a month too much for us to keep it, can you believe that? I still don’t even know why they gave me and Thaddeus the coverage in the first place if he makes too much money. Probably the worker is an idiot and messed up something so we lose it. I knew I wouldn’t stay on it, they told me from the beginning that 2 months after I have the baby I would be dropped, but to drop my 5 year old?

In Michigan they do back date, which is great. I don’t have to worry about that. But I did finally receive a call back from the worker and he says that Xavier is listed and covered. We’ll see though.

Wow that’s crazy! Insane you have to go to the office just to set up an appointment! I’m sorry you are going through this. Five years ago my dad put off cancer treatment until he was eligible for Medicare so he could afford to have surgery!

I can assure you it’s not just in Michigan because we have family members going through the same thing. Most of the money comes from the federal government (you and me), but each state administers it’s own program. My sister worked for a state government as budget director for the agency that dealt with healthcare. Many of the bureaucratic issues that arise in the states are due to the over-reaching regulations imposed by the federal government. It occurs with both Medicaid and Medicare. Under the budget proposal that’s currently being negotiated in DC,, the plan written by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) gives the Medicaid money to the states and let’s them manage it for themselves. It’s a great start to ending the mess! And for workers currently under the age of 55, it will give them money to purchase their own healthcare instead of sticking them in a broken Medicare system. It’s a huge step in the right direction.

PS! Regarding the healthcare provided to Congress…it’s not all that great, nothing like what most union and state workers have. I’m a retired federal employee and we are in the FEHBP just like Congress. We do have a choice from several plans which is good. Our medical coverage is decent, but our dental pays next to nothing on cleaning and in almost all other instances doesn’t cover other work. Our vision coverage is non-existent, as in none.

That’s awful! I hope everything gets straightened out quickly.

I recommend calling your US Senator or Congressman. Their district offices have staff to help with crazy problems like yours! Good luck. It’s hard enough having a baby in the NICU! My twins were 8 weeks early!
