Safe around children, pets, and the environment

Since EcoSMART’s proprietary botanical oil blends attack attributes that are specific only to pests, they have no effect on people, pets or the environment. When we bought our home last summer, we got a well maintained home with a large yard and everything that went along with it, including the insects! Living right off of Lake St. Clair and have a front yard full of trees and shrugs, and a back yard with hedges, 2 fruit trees, lilacs and assorted shrubs, and over 20 fully mature rose bushes (along with bird baths and other flower gardens), you can imagine the horde of insects we have to put up with. And then there’s the weeds! The previous owner was out of the home for well over a year before we bought it, and for the last few years she lived here she was physically incapable of taking care of the landscaping. But the house was perfect for us, so we were able to overlook such inconveniences.

Well, spring is here! And so are the weeds and insects, and they just don’t get the picture that this is OUR home and yard now, not THEIRS! So when we were given the opportunity to test and review the products by EcoSMART we couldn’t say no. Especially considering that the products are organic and safe for kids and animals. I don’t just like to go around all willy-nilly blasting poison all around my house. We have a little boy, and we love watching the animals outside (even though the squirrels eat everything in the gardens), and I hate watching those guys pull up to our neighbors homes all decked out in their bio-hazard suits, blasting God knows what all over the place and seeing how the wind carries it everywhere! As I type this I see one of their death wagons drive by out the window, oh the irony.

So let’s get on to the review, shall we?

First, we used the weed and grass killer. My wife decided to give this one a shot in one of her rose gardens that runs along the entire back of our house and along the west fence line. With what she had left over (and there wasn’t much, we had a lot of weeds in there) she started blasting the grass growing in the expansion cracks of the back yard sidewalk as well as the driveway. This stuff smells good! I don’t mean “good for a weed killer” but actually sweet and something you don’t mind catching a nose full of. The before and after pictures were taken about 30hrs apart, and as you can see it worked just as it should, without all the stink and harmful side effects you’d get from off the shelf stuff.

The other morning I used one of their organic pesticides that is made for flowers, gardens, shrubs, trees, and lawns. You know the kind; you hook it to your garden hose and just spray everything down.  Instead of just two settings (on and off) you get three, on, off, and water. Why’s this a big deal to me?  Have you ever used a yard product that attaches to the hose and when you were done spraying you still had some product left over?  When you shut off the water and disconnect the bottle from the hose, then BLAM! A face, chest, and legs full of water from the pressure built up in the hose. Well, when I got finished spraying this morning, I shut the valve off at the house, then I just flipped the bottle over to “water” and let the pressure escape while only water shot out, not wasting any of the left over contents of the bottle. I smiled as this happened. The spray itself and the way it worked is just as you would expect, only, like the weed/grass killer, it didn’t stink to high heaven! It too, had a very pleasant and sweet smell to it. I drenched the lilac bush, the hedges, the rose bushes, and various other floras we have out back that I didn’t feel comfortable using the other stuff on when I sprayed back at the beginning of spring. Wading through swarms of gnats, mosquito, and other annoying insects running for their lives, I worked my way around the gardens and hedges with an evil smirk on my face. When all was said and done, I had given everything a nice drenching and still had plenty left over for a second application, and I’m not afraid to let my little boy go out back and play for fear of some side effect either.

It’s still to early in the season for us to need to use the organic wasp killer or the mosquito repellent, but if they work and smell as good as the other products, than I have no doubt that I will be more than pleased with their performance.
