Potty training Thaddeus was a bit of a feat for us and due to bed wetting it’s been with us for years!
It wasn’t that he wasn’t ready to learn or that he didn’t understand going to the bathroom. It was that he didn’t want to stop what he was doing to go to the bathroom. He’d rather continue playing and sit in a wet diaper, or wet clothes than stop playing and use the bathroom. This was mostly a problem at home, outside playing, or at other someone elses house. If we were at a store he’d tell us he had to go to the bathroom and go, but if we were anywhere else doing something he was enjoying he’d just go.
We finally found a solution to daytime mistakes, we used a cooking timer and every 60 minutes it would go off and off to the bathroom he would go, no matter what he was doing. After a few days he was going on his own!
At night was a different story!
We have tried all different types of things to stop his bed wetting at night, but nothing had worked for us, that is until we tried the Dry-Me Bedwetting Alarm! We had tried waking him up several times a night, we tried the cooking timer in his room to go off every 60 minutes, we did the no drinks after a certain time, nothing worked. I mean, NOTHING worked! Then I was given the opportunity to try out a bed wetting alarm and I was skeptical at first. If he wasn’t waking up for a cooking timer, he wasn’t going to wake up for this alarm.
Boy was I wrong!
We received the alarm along with the book Seven Steps to Nighttime Dryness on January 10, 2013 and he started using it the following night. The basic object of the alarm is for the child to wear it, it clips onto their underwear and their shirt and once they start to urinate in their sleep the alarm will go off. This will wake them up and then they can use the bathroom, change clothes (if needed) and then go back to sleep. It helps them understand the feeling of having to go when you are sleeping and to wake up. It’s weird to explain, but it does work! Once the child does not wet their bed for 14 straight days wearing the alarm they then wear it every other night for 14 more days. If they go those 14 days of every other night with no accidents than they can stop using the alarm. However, if they wet the bed then they will have to start over and go 14 days with the alarm and no bed wetting and then 14 days of every other night again.
Amazingly, Thaddeus caught on very quickly! By January 29th, he had already had 9 straight dry nights. Then a slip-up. I’m thinking it was because he was sick, we ended up getting Strep at that time. So he started over.
On February 13th, he finished his 14 straight days of dryness and then started his every other night. I’m happy to say that as of today he has been dry every night for over a month! What a wonderful product!
*NOTE: Experiences and results of using these products will vary for each family, there is no guarantee you will see the same results that we saw.
One of the great things about the alarm is that it doesn’t seem to interfere with the child sleeping. Thaddeus never once complained about it getting in his way in the middle of the night. because the cord isn’t very long you don’t have to worry about your child getting tangled up in it throughout the night when they are tossing and turning.
The book Seven Steps to Nighttime Dryness by Renee Mercer, MSN, CPNP is wonderful. It has a lot of explanations and helpful information in it about bed wetting. It will give you some great reasons of why bed wetting is and could be happening for your child along with things you can try to help prevent it.
