Taxes are DONE

That's right, I just finished our taxes :woohoo No, I am not the type to wait until the last minute.  I want to get them done ASAP and get our refund ASAP.  With the purchase of the house last year, we couldn't e-file our federal return, so it'll take FOREVER to get the refund, but it's done!  We got to e-file our state return, so hopefully we'll have that within a couple weeks :yup Have you filed your returns yet or do you wait until the last minute? {Keep on Reading}

Extra Income

Make sure that you claim all income you receive.  If you have a small business and you earned more than $1,000 in self-employment work,  you need to report it by using the Schedule C to claim business expenses. If you made a profit, you need to pay self-employment taxes. If you've lost money, it is worth it to add up your business expenses to see if they exceeded what you eared and claim the loss (this lowers your AGI). Deductions

You may recall my post on Tax and Credits in my Tax Tip {Part 4} where I talked about the normal standard deductions.  Now I'm going to talk about the deductions you can take that most either don't realize they can take or that don't take because then they need to itemize. Take a look at these deductions that  you can take and add them up to see if the total exceeds your standard deduction ($11,400 married filing jointly, $5,700 single or married filing separately, or $8,350 head of household).
